For future Canadian dietetic professionals:

Before the trip:

The participant will work with a Dietitians Explore! team member as a coach to set personal and professional goals to pursue throughout the trip. Preparation for the trip will also include an orientation to the host destination, an introduction to co-participants, assignment details, expectations and evaluation criteria, review of the itinerary and development of a communication plan. Resources to assist with travel arrangements for accommodations, travel safety and leisure activities will also be provided.

DE! will provide guidance and support so that the participant is well-prepared for a safe and enjoyable experience!

During the trip:

Dietitians Explore! offers a dynamic and engaging itinerary focused on food, nutrition, health, culture and professional development for future dietetic professionals. A Dietitians Explore! team member attends the trip with the participants. Each trip is unique. Here are examples of what the trip may include:

  • An orientation to the dietetic profession and key health issues in the host country
  • A demonstration at a national food and nutrition laboratory
  • Job-shadowing the international dietitian host during nutrition counselling of individual clients or groups
  • Tours of local food markets with dietitian hosts
  • Assisting the international dietitian host during a public health community out-reach event or health and wellness fair in the community
  • Assisting in the development of a food and nutrition education tool for a particular community group such as seniors, pregnant women or children
  • Attending an orientation to food and nutrition computer software used in food service administration in the host country

At the end of the trip each participant will give a presentation of their assignment and of their experience during the trip. The international dietitian host and the participant will complete an evaluation to reflect on learning and consider areas for future development.

After the trip:

After the successful completion of the trip the participant will receive a DE! certificate of participation. They will also have one last meeting with their DE! coach to review their evaluation and share any last reflections on the experience.

DE! will also encourage participants to write an article, blog entry or share a video or photo essay of their experience for the Adventure Diaries.

After the trip:

Dietitians Explore! will provide dietitian mentors with a certificate of participation and a monetary honorarium. In addition, our team will seek opportunities to share our trip experience with other dietitians by writing summaries for dietitian newsletters, blogs or social media.
